Flowing "payos".

In modern society, Hassidic Jews stand out as a result of their distinctive dress and customs. Most Hasidic men wear dark hats which are unique to their particular sect. Clothing styles are often based upon the type worn in the Eastern European community from which the group originated. Many wear dark, somber garments which hearken back to the formal styles of dress of prior centuries.

The "payos" or side locks are worn in obedience to the Biblical

commandment in Leviticus 19:27;

You shall not round the corners of your heads, nor mar the edges of your beards.

The Hassids and some other Jews interpret this commandment as prohibiting the cutting of the "payos." Many wear modest side locks, while others wear them in flowing waves.
