A request for a portrait begins with a
general consultation either in person or by phone. I listen to
the client's ideas about how they want themselves or their loved
ones portrayed. We talk about the interests of the subjects to
decide if a hobby, activity or a special environment should be
included. The mood and tone is decided. Clothing, setting, colors,
size and anything else of importance is also discussed. At the
time of commission I require 50% deposit.
Most of my work is done in my large, comfortable
studio. I can create the painting by working from photographs
or from a "live sitting". If possible, I would like
the client to be present for the sitting at the beginning and
sometimes at the end. I photograph my client so I can remember
|
thedetails of their face and expressions.
The photographs are taken in my studio or in their own environment.
When this is not possible I use photographs provided by the clients,
some taken the week before and others taken one hundred years
ago.
An original oil portrait is painted in
full color on linen canvas and takes approximately 1 to 6 months
to complete. When the portrait is complete, the client and I
discuss the result. If there is any special request for changes,
they will be made. The remainder of the fee is paid when the
client takes the painting home. The frame is not included in
the portrait fee, however, I will be happy to assist the client
in selecting an appropriate frame.
